With technological progress, our means of communication continue to improve with each passing moment. Among the popular mediums of connecting today are phone calls. In a recent advancement around it, Nokia CEO Pekka Lundmark made a phone call via a technology known as "immersive audio and video" that improves audio quality using immersive sound and makes communication more lifelike.

According to Reuters, Lundmark labelled the moment as the "future of voice calls". For context, the Nokia CEO was a spectator of the first 2G call in 1991. Regular phone calls are monophonic and compress elements, which leads to relatively flatter sound and fewer details. However, with 3D audio, users can hear details as if they were present in the environment with the person on the other end.

"It is the biggest leap forward in the live voice calling experience since the introduction of monophonic telephony audio used in smartphones and PCs today" citing President Jenni Lukander of Nokia Technologies, the report noted. Stefan Lindström, Finland's Ambassador of Digitalisation and New Technologies was on the other end of the call. The technology is also being standardised to allow network operators, chipset makers, and smartphone companies to implement it on products.

Nokia used a regular handset to initiate the call over 5G. The technology can also be used to make immersive conference calls to separate a participant's voice based on spatial locations, according to the company's head of audio research Jyri Huopaniemi. The immersive calling technology can be implemented in smartphones with two microphones by transmitting real-time spatial characteristics in calls.
