JE Technology Desk: Google Chat, a communication and collaboration tool, will get new features to enhance the user experience on the app. While some of these features are already rolling out, the rest will debut in the coming weeks. Here are more details of all the features the search leader highlighted in a recent blog post.
Smart Compose
Already live in Gmail and Docs, Smart Compose helps users craft a quick chat suggestion that is "contextually-aware" and minimise grammatical errors. While typing in the chat box, hit the "tab" button to accept the suggested response. This feature is rolling out in English, French, Spanish, Italian and Portuguese for web users.
Message Editing
As the name suggests, the feature will allow users to tweak a sent message to add and edit information depending on their needs or just delete the message. It is rolling out to all Chat users.
Quoting Messages In Group
A Chat user can quote a message in a group chat to keep track of things amid a series of messages to let participants know what's happening. It is available for all users.
Read Receipts In Group
Read receipts for group messages will now display an avatar of people who view the message next to the chat. To check all reactions, users can hover on the read receipt to expand the list of people. This feature is rolling out on mobile and the web.
Link To Text
To avoid cluttered messages, users can link text in a message similar to Docs or Slides. To hyperlink a text, users can select a portion of the message and hit the link icon from the formatting toolbar and paste the URL. An easy method is to click "⌘/Ctrl + K" from the keyboard. It will roll out on Android and the web in the coming weeks.
Hiding Inactive Conversations
For users who have over 10 conversations or spaces in the chat list, the feature will hide the inactive ( chats of the last seven days) spaces and DMs. The complete list can be accessed by hitting the "More" button. This feature is already live for users.
Chat Apps
It will help manage conversations with app integration. Asana, Zapier and Giphy were highlighted in the blog post by Google. The function to download apps for Chats will be available in the coming weeks.
