June 13, 2025 - Google is giving Workspace users a handy boost: Gemini can now scan any PDF saved in Google Drive and spit out a quick summary card. The feature is rolling out today for everyone, so handling files should feel quicker and a lot smarter.
What's New in Google Drive?
Open a PDF and you'll see an AI summary card pop up on the right. Each card gives you:
- A one-paragraph recap of what the document is about
- Clickable buttons for common tasks, like:
- Draft a basic proposal
- Build interview questions from this resume
- Press a button and Gemini slides out in a side panel, letting you work without leaving the file.
Key Features
Double-click to see the summary: it pops up in the PDF viewer, not in a new tab.
Smart actions: Suggestions change based on what kind of document you opened.
Side-panel ease: The proposed text is written in the same window.
Available in over twenty languages from day one.
Availability
You'll find this feature in Drive if you belong to one of these groups:
- Google Workspace work plans: Business Standard, Enterprise Standard and Enterprise Plus, or the Gemini Education Plan.
- People are still using the old AI Pro or Ultra add-ons.
Optional & Customizable
Like the previous setup? You can flip a Drive setting and force PDFs to pop in a new tab instead of the preview pane.
Why It Matters?
Google keeps folding Gemini AI into its everyday apps- Docs, Sheets, Gmail, now Drive- and the gains are real. The fast PDF summaries and one-click buttons save time for anyone juggling resumes, contracts, reports, or other heavy files.
Gemini's new PDF notes let you read, think, and act on big documents straight from the preview window. With brief overviews, helpful pop-out tips, and do-this-now links, this upgrade might change the way you handle cloud-based PDFs.
