Google Workspace Updates: Tech giant Google regularly brings enhancements to its Workspace apps. With these changes, the company aims to upscale the user experience on this wide range of services. And in the latest move, Google has now introduced client-side encryption in the communication app Gmail for Android and iOS. This would enable users to read and write encrypted emails from these devices.

Plus, it would enable users to engage with their "most sensitive data" from their handsets, irrespective of the location, while complying with the regulatory requirements. The mobile app would support encrypted mail by default. This would eliminate the need for a separate app or an external portal to view these messages.

"While Workspace encrypts data at rest and in transit by using secure-by-design cryptographic libraries, client-side encryption ensures that you have sole control over encryption keys and access to your data," the tech giant said.

It ensures that sensitive data in email and attachments is "indecipherable" to even the servers of Google. A user has control over "encryption keys and identify service" to access these keys. To use the feature, users can tap the lock icon, select "Turn on" option in "Additional encryption," and frame the email as usual.

Admins can enable the mobile clients from the CSE admin interface to disperse access. This can be enabled from the Admin Console from "Security > Access and data control > Client-side encryption > Identity provider configuration". The client-side encryption is now available to Education Plus, Workspace Enterprise Plus and Education Standard clients.

On a related note, the company recently announced that the Basic HTML view of Gmail will be last visible until January next year. After this deadline, the view will automatically switch to the Standard appearance. The Basic view on mobile and computer does not support spell checker, keyboard shortcuts, chat, adding or importing contacts, rich formatting and custom "from" addresses.
