Search leader Google is facing the heat for its new AI Overviews after announcing the update at Google I/O 2024. In a recent instance, when a user asked the model with a query about cheese not sticking on their pizza, the response was somewhat unexpected. Google recommended users add "non-toxic glue" to the sauce for more tackiness.

According to responses shared by X user Peter Yang, the "cheese not sticking to pizza" could be due to too much sauce, cheese or thickened sauce. In the 'Mix in sauce' solution, Google recommended users "add about 1/8 cup of non-toxic glue to the sauce to give it more tackiness". The source of information was a Reddit post that dates back over 11 years.

According to the original post, the Reddit account recommended users to "mix about 1/8 cup of Elmer's glue in with the sauce", which was a joke for users. In a previous instance, a user asked how many rocks they should eat, the AI Overview (citing UC Berkeley geologists) said: "at least one small rock per day is recommended". These are among the many instances shared on social media in the recent past.

Google spokesperson Meghann Farnsworth told The Verge that these errors were reported on "generally very uncommon queries, and aren't representative of most people's experiences." She said these "isolated examples" are being used to refine the product. These are part of hallucinations that not only plague Google but AI models from OpenAI, Meta and Perplexity.
