Google is working on an improved version of its virtual assistant that will use generative artificial intelligence (AI) technology similar to that used in ChatGPT and Bard. The new "supercharged" Assistant seeks to provide users with more helpful and conversational experiences. In an internal communication to employees, the tech giant emphasised its desire to capitalise on the promise of generative AI to better people's lives.

The project has already begun with a specialised team focusing on mobile devices. However, the company also stated that some team responsibilities would be removed. Google promised concerned employees assistance, including a minimum of a 60-day internal search period based on local laws.

"We have already informed these teammates, and we will give specialised support to assist them in navigating this transition," the tech giant said in an internal email sent to employees on Monday, seen by Axios.

"Based on local requirements, everyone affected will have a minimum of a 60-day internal search time. These have been really painful decisions, so please be patient with teammates who are dealing with this news,” it added.

The most recent development builds on prior reports regarding Google's efforts to enable Assistant to summarise webpages for consumers. In addition, the business added two new voices, Lime and Indigo, to increase the variety of speech selections for its virtual assistant.

"To increase the variety of your current options, we added two more types to our collection of US English voices," the company had said.

Users only need to ask Google to change their voice by saying "Hey Google, change your voice."

While the specific number of layoffs is unknown, Google's pursuit of a more advanced and diversified Assistant demonstrates the company's dedication to improving user experiences and leveraging the capabilities of generative AI technology.
