Google is making a big change to its smart home ecosystem by rolling out Gemini, its new generative AI assistant, across devices. The company confirmed on Wednesday that Gemini will now replace Google Assistant as the core system for managing its smart displays, speakers, cameras, and doorbells—covering products released in the past decade.

The shift is designed to make controlling devices more natural and intuitive. Instead of relying on fixed phrases, users can now speak in everyday language. In a demo, Google showed someone asking a smart speaker for a recipe based on ingredients at home, then immediately adjusting the dish with follow-up requests. Because Gemini can keep track of conversational context, users don’t have to repeat themselves each time they give a command.

Google also wants Gemini to extend beyond its own hardware. The company announced a new partner programme, starting with connected cameras, to encourage other manufacturers to build Gemini directly into their products. Walmart has already signed on, offering two devices that will ship with Gemini integration.

This move comes as competition in AI-powered home tech heats up. Amazon just introduced its latest Echo speakers with an upgraded Alexa+ assistant, also promising more fluid, human-like interactions. Many in the industry see this as the next stage of computing—where smart speakers, glasses, earbuds, and even wearable pendants could replace the smartphone as the primary interface for digital life.

Others are also betting big on this vision. OpenAI is reportedly developing a device with former Apple design chief Jony Ive, while Apple itself is said to be working on a smart display mounted on a robotic arm that swivels to face the user.
