Paytm has introduced a new feature with which users can generate custom UPI IDs to make digital transactions in a more private way. By creating unique UPI IDs, you can even conceal your mobile number or email address during money transfer, making way for secure transactions.

Google Pay and Other UPI Platforms to Introduce Custom IDs

Google Pay and other UPI-based payment applications are also expected to follow suit after Paytm made the announcement. Though Google Pay hasn’t rolled out personalised IDs as of now, it’s likely that it will allow users to set alphanumeric UPI IDs like what Paytm is doing.

Why Personalised UPI IDs Matter

UPI custom IDs aim to strengthen privacy and security. Users can opt for a custom ID instead of sharing a phone number or email during transactions, thereby averting the threat of harassment and stalking. It also facilitates users establishing a separate digital identity for their banking and payment transactions.

This comes amid the National Payments Corporation of India's (NPCI) decision to hike and double the transaction limit for peer-to-peer and peer-to-merchant UPI payments, furthering the need for more secure transactions.

How to Create a Personalised UPI ID on Paytm

Changing your UPI ID on Paytm is simple and quick. Here’s how:

1. Open the Paytm app.

2. Tap on the Profile icon at the top left corner.

3. Go to UPI & Payment Settings and tap “View” next to your UPI ID.

4. Tap the text box above “Try Personalised UPI ID.”

5. A menu opens where you can type your desired ID or select from suggested options.

6. Tap Confirm.

Once confirmed, your phone number or email is replaced by your custom alphanumeric ID, followed by “@pt(bank name).”

Personalised UPI IDs Coming Soon to Google Pay

Although the option is not yet live on Google Pay, users can navigate to it by going to the Profile tab, selecting Bank account, tapping their primary bank, and then choosing Manage UPI IDs. Once available, the process is expected to be similar to Paytm.
