SmartEdit is a new feature for Gboard's voice typing feature that works hand in hand with Google's AI. As mentioned before, Android Authority claims SmartEdit will take Gboard's voice typing feature to the next level. In the past, Gboard only permitted basic edits such as deleting or replacing text, but with SmartEdit, users will be able to perform contextual and complex edits without needing to touch their devices.

What is SmartEdit on Gboard?

Gboard’s SmartEdit is an advanced voice command editing feature identified by Android Authority in Gboard’s beta version 15.6.2 for Android. Despite not yet being available to users, early code and screenshots support the theory that there is a lot to look forward to.

The possibilities seem endless with SmartEdit, including:

  • Streamline text by commanding cut and add.
  • Instruct to add specific terms before or after target phrases.
  • Remove or replace specified terms.
  • Change casing (capitalisation) or spellings.
  • Carry out selective text alterations while reciting, rather than restarting.

This shows that great improvement can be made from the current version of voice typing, which consists mainly of text insertion and deletion.

When Will SmartEdit Launch?

There still isn’t an official date, but some sources expect Google to unveil SmartEdit with the Pixel 10 series, which is likely to premiere in August 2025. If that is the case, then there is a possibility that the feature will be Pixel exclusive at launch, likely using Gemini Nano, Google’s lightweight AI for smartphones, to process on-device.
