Google has incorporated its AI-powered Modes within a Q&A format in searching, making it accessible in India. The update is now available to users via Search Labs; however, it does require manual opt-in from users.

With the rapid growth of new competitors such as ChatGPT and Perplexity AI, this marks a pivotal moment for Google as they strengthen their market position, further integrating advanced technology innovations into their core search operations.

What Is Google AI Mode?

AI mode enables users to interact through voice queries by using natural language processing algorithms, which can respond with precise answers to intricate questions provided by the user. It closely resembles dialogue, simulating more human interactions while being context-sensitive, allowing conversations to be seamless and organic.

Example Query:

My kids are 4 and 7 and have lots of energy. Suggest creative ways to get them active and moving indoors, especially on hot days, without needing a lot of space or expensive toys.

Users can ask follow-up questions to refine results, a key feature for deep, evolving queries.

Key Features for India

  • Opt-in via Search Labs – Limited Access: Enrolment is restricted exclusively to those who join Search Labs.
  • Support For Languages – Currently Only English: Does not consider either timeline or strategy regarding support for regional languages.
  • Voice & Image Search: Fully operational in India, highlighting the nation’s considerable engagement with voice-based search functionality.
  • Powered by Gemini 2.5: AI Mode is powered by a customized Google Gemini model specifically tailored to enhance Search, optimized for auxiliary functions.

Global Rollout Context

After feedback from premium users on the AI Mode test conducted in the US, Google decided to expand access after Google I/O 2025. Over time, additional features have been implemented such as:

  • Shopping integrations
  • Voice & image search
  • Inline ads within AI results

This marks the first public testing phase in India which helps Google observe how multilingual users interact with Conversational AI. This can include basic turn-taking, multimodal interaction as well as context maintenance.

Why It Matters

The Indian market ranks high with over 870 million internet users and is critical for Google to tap into. With more people utilizing platforms that offer an AI-first approach to search, this release appears to be an attempt against the rising popularity of chat-based services such as OpenAI's ChatGPT and Perplexity.

Google reports that when interacting with AI Mode, users tend to ask queries 2–3 times longer compared to before which indicates opportunities for deeper user engagement and search experience personalisation.

Conclusion

The introduction of Google AI Mode in India marks a shift in the company’s focus towards a more intuitive, dialogue-based search system for the future. Although the mode is still labeled as experimental, it demonstrates Google’s efforts to stay competitive within the conversational AI ecosystem and make use of its legacy systems and established market position.
