Google Meet, a video calling service, is a popular choice for connecting online via video conferencing. The company bring new features to the platform at regular intervals. In the latest move, the company is adding the option in Google Meet to automatically switch to picture-in-picture mode to help you solve the problem of staying updated with the calling updates while switching tabs in a video call.
According to Google's Workspace Updates blog post, users had to manually enable the feature in meetings in the previous scheme. But this change will now trigger automatically when a user moves to another tab. For context, picture-in-picture mode is only available in Google Chrome on PCs. While no admin action is required, users can disable the feature from the Google Chrome settings.
"You can turn this feature on and off by selecting the 'View site information' icon in the Chrome URL bar and turning 'Automatic picture-in-picture' off," Google said. Explaining the utility of the feature, Google noted: "This simple, yet impactful update, will help ensure your meeting stays visible and accessible if you need to switch tabs to take notes, view meeting related documents, and more."
The feature will be available to all Google Workspace users, Workspace Individual users and personal Google account holders. As per Google, the gradual rollout in the "rapid release" domains started on August 26 and the feature visibility may take up to 15 days. For scheduled release domains, this will begin on September 10.
Users can open picture-in-picture mode by clicking on the three dots next to the hangup button and choosing "Open picture-in-picture". Users can move the UI by clicking on the top of the meeting UI and dragging it across the screen. Users can resize the picture-in-picture meeting with a click and drag from the edge.
