Google Photos is getting a major AI upgrade. The tech giant has announced a wave of new features that make editing, creating, and searching photos more intuitive — and a lot smarter. The biggest highlight? The integration of Nano Banana, Google’s advanced image editing model, directly into the Photos app. Alongside that, a new Ask button now lets users interact with their photo library conversationally.
Nano Banana brings AI-powered edits to Google Photos
The newly added Nano Banana model takes Google Photos’ editing capabilities to the next level. Android users can now tap “Help me edit” and ask the AI to do things like “paint me as a Renaissance portrait” or “turn this into a colourful mosaic.” Essentially, anything that Google’s Gemini AI can do with Nano Banana can now be done straight inside Photos.

For now, Google hasn’t confirmed a global release. The Nano Banana editing tools are available for Android users first, while iOS users in the US are just getting the “Help me edit” feature — though it’s limited to basic edits within the native Photos editor. iPhone users are also getting a redesigned photo editor as part of this rollout.
The Create tab gets smarter with AI templates
Earlier this year, Google introduced the Create tab to organise its AI tools in one place. Now, this section is expanding with AI templates powered by Nano Banana. Users can apply popular edit styles, like a “high fashion photoshoot”, to transform their photos — no text prompts needed. This feature is rolling out first in India and the US on Android this week.
In the coming weeks, Google plans to make these tools even more personal. The app will soon use insights from your photo gallery — such as hobbies, travel, and interests — to suggest custom edits, starting with users in the US.
“Ask” Photos expands globally
Perhaps the most conversational update yet, Google Photos is introducing a new Ask button within your photo library. Users can type or speak to the AI to find related photos, describe edits, or even start a chat about what’s in an image.

Meanwhile, the Ask Photos conversational image search feature—which lets you talk to your photo library like a chatbot—is being expanded to over 100 countries and 17 new languages, marking one of Google Photos’ biggest global rollouts to date.
