Google AI Mode: On Tuesday, Google swapped out its usual homepage Doodle for something a bit unexpected — a promotion for “AI Mode”, the company’s latest AI-powered search feature.
Instead of spotlighting a historical figure or cultural moment, the animated Doodle served as a direct gateway to AI Mode, Google’s chatbot-style tool designed to help users tackle more complex questions. And for a change, this Doodle even included a share button — something not typically seen in Google’s homepage artwork.
A Google spokesperson clarified the move, saying this wasn’t one of their traditional Doodles. Rather, it was “just a fun promo” to get more eyes on AI Mode.
While AI Mode itself isn’t brand new — Google began rolling it out alongside regular search results back in March — this marks one of the company’s most visible efforts to spotlight the feature. It’s a sign that Google is ramping up its push to get users familiar with its AI tools, especially as the competition grows with platforms like OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Anthropic’s Claude, and Perplexity AI entering the scene.
So, what does AI Mode actually do? Built on Google’s Gemini AI model, it’s designed to answer more in-depth, layered queries — the kind that might normally take several searches to resolve. Users can interact with it in multiple ways: typing, speaking, or uploading images. Once a question is submitted, AI Mode delivers a detailed response powered by artificial intelligence.
This isn't the first time Google has experimented with giving AI Mode a more prominent spot. Back in May, it quietly swapped out the “I’m Feeling Lucky” button on the homepage with an AI Mode option — a rare move, considering how little that part of the page ever changes.

With the latest homepage push, it’s clear Google is doubling down on its AI ambitions — and encouraging users to make AI a bigger part of their everyday search experience.
