Search giant Google has declared support for European parliamentary elections by surfacing high-quality content for voters to safeguard the company's platforms from abuse and facilitating campaigns with top-notch security measures and training. For the unversed, voters across 27 member states of the EU will vote to elect Members of the European Parliament (MEPs).

The company will also deploy a host of AI technologies to curb abuse and misinformation. These measures will help electors get relevant information to sail through the electoral process using useful online information.

"Across our efforts, we'll have an increased focus on the role of artificial intelligence (AI) and the part it can play in the misinformation landscape — while also leveraging AI models to augment our abuse-fighting efforts," said Annette Kroeber-Riel, VP of Government Affairs and Public Policy for Europe.

In the future, if users post 'how to vote', they can explore details about how people can vote along with information such as ID requirements, registration, voting deadlines and voting abroad, Google said. It will also serve guidance about in-person and mail voting. "We're collaborating with the European Parliament which aggregates information from Electoral Commissions and authorities in the 27 EU member states," Google noted in its blog post.

Election advertisers who want to run ads across Google platforms will have to undergo a verification process and have a disclosure that reveals the details about who paid for the advertisement. "These ads are published in our Political Ads Transparency Report, where anyone can look up information such as how much was spent and where it was shown. We also limit how advertisers can target election ads," Google stated.

AI models shall help enforce these policies and aid the company's efforts. "We have policies across our products and services that address misinformation and disinformation in the context of AI," Google added. The company will also limit election-related queries on its "most capable" AI model - Gemini.

YouTube may also display election information panels that relate to candidates, parties or voting in elections. Plus, creators would have to disclose whether the video was made using AI. Consequently, the company will add a label on synthetic videos. The company also launched an EU-specific hub at euelections.withgoogle for voters.
