Google Vids, the video creation and editing platform from Google, is now available to all Workspace users for free. Initially launched in November 2024 for paid Workspace subscribers, the tool is now expanding to free-tier users with a basic version.
While free users will not get access to some of the AI-powered features such as Veo 3 video generation, storyboard automation, and AI voiceovers, they can still use Google Vids for recording, editing, and assembling video decks.
Google Vids Expands Access
In its official blog post, Google confirmed that Google Vids has crossed one million monthly active users, highlighting its popularity among professionals and creators.

The free-tier version gives users access to essential video-making tools, including:
- Recording anchor-led videos and screen recordings
- Uploading videos from Google Drive, Google Photos, or local storage
- Importing slides to integrate into video projects
- Using a variety of video templates for quick creation
However, advanced features powered by AI remain exclusive to paid users. Notably, the Veo 3 model allows editing of up to 8-second-long clips, but this feature is not available in the free plan.
How Google Vids Works
Google Vids differs from AI-powered text-to-video generators by not creating videos from scratch; rather it serves more like a deck creation platform by gathering clips, images and slides together into an engaging storyboard for users to customize further with voiceover narrations, scripts or design adjustments.

Final Thoughts
Google Vids now makes professional-looking video presentations more accessible for creators, educators, and businesses - without needing sophisticated video editing tools or AI features that may only be found in paid plans. While premium AI features may remain exclusive to paid plans only for now, its free version still provides enough power for most basic editing and storytelling needs.
