Google’s Material 3 Expressive UI: A Bouncier Android Experience Is Coming

Google is advancing a new phase in Android’s design evolution, labelled Material 3 Expressive. This approach is extending beyond third-party applications to the core Android system interface. Departing from the earlier emphasis on fixed, predictable layouts, Material 3 Expressive introduces a distinct personality through gentle, smooth transitions, purposefully rounded elements, and deliberately playful animations, resulting in a noticeably more kinetic experience. Android Authority recently did the breakdown of upcoming changes, drawing from a decompilation of the latest Google app package.

What Is Material 3 Expressive?

Material 3 Expressive refines the groundwork first laid by Material You in Android 12. Whereas Material You centred on adaptive colour and personal interpretation, Material 3 Expressive deepens the experience through motion and spatial hierarchy. Its signature characteristics include:

- Rounded interface elements that now feature sharper contrast edges, improving legibility across light and dark themes.

- Bouncier, friction-inspired animations that give buttons, cards, and menus a sense of weight and fluidity.

- A refined emphasis on interaction design: floating buttons and chip labels exhibit slight, deliberate nudges that cue users and subtly direct their gaze to the next logical action.

The Gemini Overlay Gets a “Bouncy” Redesign

One of the most noticeable changes in development involves the Gemini overlay. Right now, the overlay appears with a simple, no-nonsense slide-up animation from the bottom of the screen. With the new approach, the overlay will spring into place with momentum, giving it a “bouncy” feel.

This is not just cosmetic. The animation will highlight the chips — the extra options above the input bar — encouraging users to explore Gemini’s features more actively.

What We Know So Far

At present, we're reviewing version 16.28.59.sa.arm64 beta of Google Android app. Though not visible yet to users, when Google activates this new animation will see additional options swing in place with more flair above the main input bar than previously seen in previous iterations of this animation.
