Google has finally announced additional measures to protect its platforms from misuse and assist users in providing all citizens with high-quality information and avoiding AI-generated content, ahead of the Lok Sabha 2024 elections. This comes after the internet giant announced a partnership with the Indian Election Commission to enable anyone to find voting-related information on Google Search, such as registration requirements and voting procedures in both Hindi and English.

For each election ad they want to run, Google requires all advertisers who wish to do so to go through an identity verification process, provide a pre-certificate issued by the ECI or anyone authorised by the poll panel, and have in-ad disclosures that make it clear who paid for the advertisement.

"We have long-standing ads policies that prohibit ads from promoting demonstrably false claims that could undermine trust or participation in elections," the business stated. Additionally, the business has started to impose limitations on the kinds of election-related queries that Gemini AI will be able to answer.

According to the business, every image created with Google products includes an embedded watermark using "SynthID," a feature of Google DeepMind. YouTube will soon start requiring content creators to identify when they have produced realistically altered or synthetic footage. When users view this type of content, a label will be displayed to let them know.

"We offer information panels that provide topical context for subjects prone to disinformation, as well as panels that list the funding sources from publishers that receive public or government money," the company added.

Google claimed to be combating misuse on a large scale by using AI models and enforcing policies.

"We use both machine learning and human reviewers to find and eliminate anything that doesn't comply with our regulations. Our AI models are strengthening our efforts to combat misuse, and a committed group of native speakers of all the main Indian languages is working around the clock to give pertinent context," the business stated.

The Fact Check Explorer tool and the Google News Initiative Training Network have made it possible for journalists and newsrooms to dispel false information with dependable, fact-checked updates. Furthermore, Google is endorsing the India Election Fact-Checking Collective (Shakti), a national coalition of fact-checkers and news publishers, in advance of the general election.
