OpenAI, the think tank behind ChatGPT, the viral chatbot ruling the AI landscape since 2022, could soon bring its upgraded large language model (LLM) in the form of GPT-5. Currently, the company's famous AI model runs on GPT-4 LLM.
Spotted by Windows Latest, the trademark filing submitted on July 18 hints that the Microsoft-backed firm may be planning a launch of an upgrade to the latest multimodal model. GPT-5 is labelled as "downloadable computer software for using language model" in the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) application.

According to the report, the AI research firm used the same description in its previous GPT-3.5 and GPT-4 applications. These are strong hints that the model could debut soon. Upon further analysis, the report discovered that the model could be capable of "human speech and text" recognition in artificial form. Plus, it may have features such as "natural language processing, generation, understanding, and analysis."
It could be capable of speech and text translation in different languages. GPT-5 may also have voice recognition capabilities and may be capable of developing artificial neural networks. The report notes that all these features are already available in GPT 4. OpenAI is likely focusing on improving GPT-4 before jumping on developments of GPT-5. As for the filing, they do not always commit a future product. They are intended to safeguard intellectual property sometimes.

For context, the company introduced GPT-4 in March this year. It is a multimodal model that accepts images to deliver text output. "While less capable than humans in many real-world scenarios, exhibits human-level performance on various professional and academic benchmarks," OpenAI said in its GPT-4 blog post.
Meanwhile, ChatGPT can accomplish a variety of tasks using its powerful GPT-4 model. The LLM can help a user in writing, offer quick guidance, and more. Besides ChatGPT, OpenAI also has DALL-E, Whisper and more tools under its AI portfolio. GPT-4 also powers Microsoft's AI-powered Bing.
