JE Technology Desk: In a piece of good news for people looking to upgrade their household gadgets, the Ministry of Finance, Government of India, announced changes brought after the introduction of Goods and Services Tax (GST) rates for electronic items such as mobile phones, TVs (up to 27 inches), refrigerators and more on the occasion of the sixth anniversary of the tax regime.

 

As per the graphic shared by the official handle (@FinMinIndia) on Twitter, users pay a decreased amount ranging from 5 per cent to 18 per cent (depending on the purchased article) as GST against the 8 to 31.3 per cent amount earlier.

"With reduced taxes, GST brings happiness to every home: Relief through GST on household appliances and mobile phones," the tweet reads.

As we brace for the jam-packed month of July in the world of smartphones, the new update has added a smile to the face of buyers. GST on mobile phones will be reduced to 12 per cent from 31.3 per cent earlier, as per the tweet.

TV buyers rejoice

TV buyers (up to 27 inches) now pay 18 per cent GST. However, in case you make a purchase of a TV with a size of over 27 inches, you will have to shell out more amount as GST.

Refrigerators, Washing Machines and Other Electronic items gets cheap after GST

Other than these two home appliances, refrigerators, washing machines, geysers, fans, coolers, LPG stoves, and electronic appliances such as mixers, juicers, vacuum cleaners, and similar products now attract only 18 per cent GST as tax.

To add to this list, LED and sewing machines are now charged at 12 per cent. Static converters (UPS) and vacuum flasks, and other vacuum vessels have witnessed a decline of 10 per cent and now are chargeable at 18 per cent GST, compared to 28 per cent earlier. Lastly, Kerosene pressure lanterns will attract a GST of 5 per cent now against the 8 in the earlier scheme.
