Apple announced on Tuesday that its recently released AirPods Pro's hearing aid features are designed to measure even mild hearing loss and reduce exposure to harsh external noise. At its Audio Lab in Cupertino, California, where all Apple devices with speakers or microphones are conceived, measured, calibrated, and certified, the world's first revolutionary end-to-end hearing aid experience was built.
Acoustic engineers tested the new features, which are designed to solve everyone's hearing concerns, in the lab's anechoic chambers, which isolate outside noise and fully absorb reflected sounds.
The new function, which offers hearing protection and tracking of hearing with an at-home hearing test, is currently accessible as a free software update. According to the business, AirPods Pro, a clinical-grade hearing aid, can also help people with mild to severe hearing loss.
Since each person's hearing is unique, we developed a cutting-edge, comprehensive hearing aid experience that takes into account this variability in a way that is easy to use and flexible enough to meet a variety of demands. "That's particularly crucial because hearing loss impacts individuals of all ages with varying degrees of technological proficiency," stated Sumbul Desai, vice president of aid at Apple.
The Audio Lab includes a Fantasia Lab and a longwave anechoic chamber.
With a specially designed driver and microphone, the longwave anechoic chamber allows precise sound measurements free from noise or vibration disruptions. It is also capable of measuring the interaction between sound and the human body.
The sound field in the Fantasia Lab is uniformly dispersed and strictly regulated. It simulates hundreds of real-world sound situations, such as a bustling street, a retail mall, or flying, using a spherical array of 50 loudspeakers.
Apple conducted a study in which individuals with varying hearing capabilities completed a speech-in-noise test in order to develop the newest functionality for hearing aids.
The participants were required to sit in the centre of the room while a complicated sound scene, such as a noisy restaurant, played, and to hear and precisely repeat the words of a single speaker.

In the Lab's three clinical-grade audiometric booths, the engineers collaborated with audiologists to perform thousands of software-based hearing tests and clinical-grade audiometry tests.
