Amid the rising threats in the online space, the Ministry of Defence has decided to swap Microsoft Windows in its internet-enabled systems across verticals. This new OS will offer robust security against online threats but have a user interface comparable to Windows to ease the transition process, IANS citing officials from Defence Ministry reported.

The new software will be installed on Defence Ministry computers initially and may pierce across Army, Navy and Air Force systems by the end of 2023. According to the official, the Navy has provided clearance to the software, and the other forces are scrutinising it.

Maya OS: Peculiar Details

The name draws its origin from the Sanskrit language and means illusion. The OS is based on Ubuntu, a Linux distribution system popular for its strong security. It has been developed by the Ministry of Defence in close liaison with the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) and National Informatics Centre (NIC).

It will have functionality similar to Windows to ensure users do not face hurdles while using the OS. According to CNBCTV18, the software also supports popular apps like Microsoft Office, Adobe Photoshop, AutoCAD and more. As per IANS, the direction is to replace existing operating systems with Maya OS on all internet-connected computers in South Block before the 77th Independence Day.

What is Chakravyuh?

Maya OS will have an antivirus software called Chakravyuh to block hackers from accessing the details on the computer. This 'endpoint detection and protection system' will also create a virtual shield for a user against malicious codes and programs.

The software has been a work in progress for more than six months. Educational institutions and software firms tested it out for scope of improvements and feedback. The idea to develop Maya first originated in 2021 owing to a wide range of cyber attacks targeting the tech infrastructure in the Indian defence. As a result, the ministry planned to swap Windows with a more secure OS.

In all, computers have grown to become an integral part of our lives. From official to personal, the software is the core enabler that helps a user achieve computing-related tasks. A good and safe experience is ensured via robust security mechanisms.

But there have multiple security breaches in the recent past in the government sector. To recall a recent high-profile breach, the All India Institute Of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Delhi, was hit by a massive cyberattack in November last year and June 2023. The change is a step in the right direction.
