Google Chrome is among the most popular internet browsers across the world. Owing to its wide popularity, the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) of the Government of India regularly warns users about the vulnerabilities in the browser to help them stay safe in the digital world.

In the latest move, the national nodal agency warned users about "multiple vulnerabilities in Google Chrome for Desktop" on August 9. The severity level of the risk has been categorised as "High".

According to the information, the vulnerabilities could allow an "attacker to execute arbitrary code, bypass security restrictions or cause a denial-of-service" on affected computers. This could imply that an attacker might be able to execute phishing attacks and infect the computer. Through these vulnerabilities, the attacker might be able to "persuade" a user to an affected website and plant the exploit.

"Multiple vulnerabilities exist in Google Chrome due to Type Confusion in V8; Heap buffer overflow in Visuals; Out of bounds read and write in WebGL; Out of bounds memory access in ANGLE; Use after free in Blink Task Scheduling, Cast and WebRTC; Insufficient data validation in Extensions and Inappropriate implementation in Extensions," the vulnerability note said.

Affected versions

As per the release, here are the affected versions:

- Chrome versions prior to 115.0.5790.170 for Linux and Mac

- Chrome versions prior to 115.0.5790.170/.171 for Windows

To stay safe from these exploits, a user is advised to update their browser.

Step 1: Open Chrome browser

Step 2: Click on the three dots at the top right

Step 3: Click "Help" at the bottom of the list

Step 4: Head to "About Google Chrome"

Step 5: Chrome will automatically check for new updates

Step 6: After the update gets downloaded, click on "Relaunch"

Besides updating the software package, a user must ensure that they do not visit malicious websites and do not click on random links. Secondly, a user must use strong passwords and enable two-step verification for accounts. Lastly, using an antivirus is also recommended.
