Instagram Backdrop AI Feature: Instagram, a popular photo-sharing platform, has introduced a new generative AI tool that lets users edit the background of their posts in a few taps. Known as 'backdrop', the AI media editing tool is currently limited to the United States. In the photo-sharing application, users can edit the background of Stories using prompts, said Ahmad Al-Dahle, who leads generative AI at Meta, on Threads, Meta's text-based updates app.

Using the tool, users can reimagine their background via prompts such as 'chased by dinosaurs' or 'surrounded by puppies' to generate a new background for a Story. After tapping the background editing icon, users can choose from the pre-populated prompts or write a custom input for themselves.

"Our AI media editing tool backdrop is available on Instagram in the US! With backdrop, you can reimagine your image's background with just a few taps and a prompt like 'chased by dinosaurs' or 'surrounded by puppies' to create an entirely new image for your Story," Al-Dahle posted.

"Tap the button for backdrop at the top of a new Story to get started. And once you've posted, a 'Try it' sticker will appear when you share the image created, making it even easier for your friends to use the backdrop for the first time," the Meta staff added.

After an Instagram user (who used the feature) uploads a Story with the new AI-generated backdrop, viewers will see a "Try it" option so that they can know that the feature was used to generate the image and can also try something similar with their photos. Besides new AI characters, this is among the key enhancements the company released on the photo-sharing app.

On a related note, Instagram's rival Snapchat was spotted working on Dreams to let users create images in imaginative themes besides new options to create AI images. You can read more on the feature here.
