Instagram Face Swap: As per the reports, Instagram is developing a new AI-powered feature that could allow users to generate images and videos using their own likeness. A tipster shared some screenshots, showing that Instagram is testing a face swap-style tool that might let users request permission to use someone else’s likeness. However, this feature has not been officially confirmed yet. But it might position Instagram as an indirect competitor to OpenAI’s Sora app and Gemini Nano Banana.

Instagram’s “Create My Likeness” Feature Explained

As per the tipster Alessandro Paluzzi posted on X, 

“#Instagram is working on an #AI-powered face swap feature.” Screenshots shared by the tipster show the tool labelled as “Create my likeness”.

If it ends up being true, this feature may allow users to:

- Access a digital version of their likeness

- Enter prompts to generate AI-powered images and videos

- Potentially share the content via DMs, feed posts, or Stories

However, whether users would need to upload a selfie to activate this feature or Instagram would use the existing posts and highlights to build the likeness profile remains unclear.

Permission Required to Use Someone Else’s Likeness

As per reports, it will be a permission-based system. And users might be able to invite others to allow access to their likeness. This invite will possibly be sent via DM, and the recipient would need to approve it before their likeness feature is used.

This is a safety and privacy wall that appears designed to prevent the misuse of the unauthorised AI-generated content that features other individuals.

How It Compares to OpenAI’s Sora

The feature seems similar to OpenAI’s Sora app. However, Sora reportedly allows users to restrict specific actions or words that cannot be generated, even if someone has access to their likeness. It is unclear how Instagram plans to implement similar safeguards.

Instagram’s parent company, Meta, has not officially confirmed the development. Therefore, users are advised to treat the report cautiously until an official announcement is made.
