Meta Threads, the closest rival to Elon Musk's X (formerly called Twitter), is now in the headlines for the rollout of two new features and the announcement that the Application Programming Interface (API) are in development. The support for sending Graphics Interchange Format (GIF) and adding polls was demonstrated by Meta boss Mark Zuckerberg.

A user can upload a GIF or create a poll from the post composer. X fans might argue that the feature has been available on Musk's microblogging app for a while. However, Threads is a relatively newer platform, and the company has been adding new features across its smartphone and web offerings.

The polls can have up to four options and a timer. A user can view the results after they vote in a poll and a notification shall be shared once it ends, The Verge reported. You can add a GIF by pressing the GIF icon while framing a post on Threads.

You can search across Giphy's library and check out trending GIFs from this menu. Instagram head Adam Mosseri also stated that the company continues to work on view counts and pinned posts.

Threads API

As a piece of good news for developers, the company is working on Threads API, Mosseri informed today. The move will let developers create experiences and applications around the platform. The photo-sharing app's boss responded to journalist Casey Newton's conversation where he engaged with a user around a TweetDeck-like apparatus.

"We're working on it. My concern is that it'll mean a lot more publisher content and not much more creator content, but it still seems like something we need to get done," Mosseri stated. Organisations like news outlets use third-party integrations across social networks to post content on the platforms automatically.

With the lack of API, these accounts manually post content on the app, which might not be a good experience considering older apps support the integrations. On a related note, CEO Zuckerberg, in the latest earnings call, stated that the app enjoys slightly below 100 million active users per month.
