JE Technology Desk: Threads, Meta's substitute for the popular Elon Musk platform Twitter is now live for users after undergoing massive scrutiny by leaks and rumours. Interested users can download the app on Android from the Google Play Store or iOS via Apple App Store. Plus, it is also available on the web at Threads.net. The app was slated to launch at 7:30 PM today but was live earlier than the state time.

Meta Threads: Features

Users who do not see it on the App Store can try force-stopping the app and recheck, The Verge recommends. A text-based post can incorporate up to 500 characters with photos and videos (max five minutes). The interface seems inspired by Twitter, with options to share, repost and comment on the post. But the design language is more Instagram-like.

The accessibility features of Instagram, like "screen reader support and AI-generated image descriptions", are available on Threads too.

Meta Threads: How To Use

A user can use the exact Instagram username to log in and follow the same accounts they follow on the photo-sharing app. The feed has a recommended section with posts from people a Threads user follows and some recommended content. The option to bifurcate between the two is not available at the moment.

For some background, the release comes as Twitter is imposing several restrictions on its platform that includes limiting tweets access and compulsory sign-in to view tweets on the platform. The microblogging platform cites data scrapping by AI firms as the reason for the move.

Elon Musk vs Mark Zuckerberg

Back to Meta's app, the company advertises Threads as a "new way to share with text". It has been a bone of contention between the two billionaires for a while now. Both agreed to contest in a cage match to solve these differences in the past which is yet to materialise.
