Instagram’s standalone video editing app Edits is getting a major boost. Launched earlier this year as Instagram’s in-house creation tool, the app is now receiving a fresh wave of features designed to make video building faster, more collaborative and far more flexible for creators. The latest update adds new templates, improved customisation controls, expanded storyboard tools and even a lock screen widget for iOS users.

New Templates And Design Tools Arrive

A post shared via the Instagram Creators account on Threads reveals the next set of additions for the Edits app. The new templates are aimed at simplifying the creative process, allowing users to quickly build videos using popular music, varied fonts and timed clips. Creators can also share their own templates with the community, expanding the pool of reusable formats. Instagram confirms that even more template styles and editing tools will arrive soon.

For now, a dedicated templates section will roll out to select creators across regions including the US, UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Ireland. The company has not announced if or when these expanded template types will reach India.

Storyboards And Public Reels Support

The update also introduces a new storyboard feature, giving creators a cleaner way to turn idea stickies into organised layouts. These can include teleprompter-ready lines, video clips and planning notes. On top of this, Edits now lets users pull public Reels directly from Instagram into their projects to remix, react or modify, while ensuring every original creator is credited.

More Customisation And Quick Access

Creators can now add a secondary colour to text backgrounds or outlines for more polished visuals. iPhone users also get a new lock screen widget that launches straight into the Edits camera or lets them drop sticky notes into the app without opening it fully.

Growing Fast With Regional Additions

Instagram launched Edits in April and has been updating it steadily. October brought special video effects, while November added support for Indian fonts. With this new batch of upgrades, the app is clearly shaping up into a more capable creative studio as Instagram sets its sights on deeper creator engagemen
