Google is poised to make a new entry into the smart glasses market, this time using artificial intelligence and different hardware partners. The company confirmed it would come out with AI-enabled smart glasses in 2026, an effort far more serious than that of the original Google Glass. The announcement comes at a period in history when interest in AI wearables among consumers is rising fast, buoyed by Meta's increasing dominance.

Two Product Paths For Google's Smart Glasses

For Google, there are two divergent models. The first is a pair of audio-only glasses with speakers, microphones, and cameras integrated. These light, screenless glasses will lean heavily on Gemini, enabling users to ask any number of questions and getting instantaneous responses sans display. This new product mirrors the baseline Meta Ray-Ban AI glasses and was designed for simplicity and all-day comfort.

A second model takes a more advanced direction, with a built-in heads-up display. This will show directions for navigation, translations, and other contextual information directly in the user's field of view. Google says that the first display-enabled glasses will arrive next year, although many specifications remain undisclosed.

New Partnerships And A Familiar Strategy

These will be developed in association with Samsung, Gentle Monster and Warby Parker. This would indicate that Google is serious about style, design and mass market appeal. Significantly, the glasses won't be labelled under the Pixel brand. Google seems to follow a script somewhat similar to its partnership with Samsung for the Galaxy XR headset. The forthcoming glasses will run on Android XR, Google's operating system for mixed reality devices. This will align headsets and eyewear under one platform.

Meta's Influence On The Market

The AI glasses category took off after the unexpected success of Meta's Ray-Ban lineup, which sold over two million units since the second generation launched in 2023. It tripled its sales in Q2 2025 and helped Meta post a significant revenue increase. The brand extended into display-equipped glasses priced at 799 dollars to set a benchmark in the segment.

The Future of Wearable AI

Tech insiders were convinced that, one day, smart glasses would become the main computer device, giving hands-free access to AI through voice and vision. For now, though, the industry remains in its early days, with Apple yet to enter the fray, though reports have placed a launch for 2026 or 2027.

Google knows this space-remember the rocky era of Google Glass? The company returns, this time on a more scalable, software-first footing. At the event this week, Google took the wraps off Project Aura, developed in conjunction with Xreal, providing display glasses that can act like a full mixed reality headset by running Android XR apps. And as competition is high, 2026 could be the year AI wearables kick off.
