iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max: Lately there has been a lot of buzz around the iPhone 17 series, the next flagship smartphone launch expected from Apple, and by far we have seen a plethora of leaks and rumours that have given us a glimpse of what to expect from the devices from Apple this time. Although nothing official has been laid out by the Cupertino-based tech giant, these leaks do generate a lot of excitement.

Until now we have seen rumours that suggest design changes, especially the camera bar, and other hardware and software upgrades, and this time we have another leak that suggests something Apple fans have been longing for: a scratch-resistant and anti-reflective display. This new upgraded display might be on the table for the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max.

In a post on X (Twitter) sourced from MacRumours, @theapplehub hinted that Apple is finally making progress on a long-rumoured display upgrade for its high-end iPhones. After months of setbacks, the company’s suppliers have managed to reach solid production yields on a new anti-reflective glass—clearing the path for it to debut on the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max. However, the standard iPhone 17 and the rumoured iPhone 17 Air won’t be getting the upgraded display.

Talk of this new anti-reflective coating first surfaced in 2024, with early reports suggesting it would also offer improved scratch resistance—potentially outperforming what Apple employs currently in its devices, the Ceramic Shield, when it comes to everyday durability.

Moving Ahead Of Production Hurdles

Initially, the advanced coating process proved too slow and inefficient for mass production, raising doubts about whether it would make it to any iPhone model at all. But with refinements to the manufacturing process, Apple has now revived its plans to bring the feature to market.

While current iPhones already include an oleophobic layer to resist fingerprints and the Ceramic Shield for drop protection, Apple hasn’t done much to tackle screen reflections—a problem Apple users have been facing for a while and it has addressed more aggressively on its iPads and Macs.

It needs to be noted that Apple's rivals, like Samsung, have a lead in this section, which has used Gorilla Glass Armour, which reduces reflections by almost 75%, giving screen visibility a much-needed boost, especially when the sun is high up on those sunny afternoons.

With the iPhone 17 Pro lineup, Apple could finally offer something similar, closing the gap on display clarity and outdoor performance.

What Else?

Apart from this, we have already covered an article on the new colourways Apple might be introducing this time for its iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max models, Dark Blue and Orange. This will be a bold step to introduce these vibrant colours in the top-end flagship variants. Moreover, rumours also reveal that Apple might use the same colour for the camera protector lens as the body itself.

With that said, this year's launch is turning out to be one of the most exciting launches by Apple so far. Although nothing is confirmed by Apple, these rumours sure give us a glimpse into what might be on the table this time.
