It's only been a few weeks since Apple's iPhone 17 series went on sale, but already people are looking ahead to what's next. Rumors and early leaks are pointing out that Apple might do something unexpected with its next iPhone line — maybe skipping the traditional iPhone 18 release in 2026 entirely.

The iPhone 18 Base Model Might Ship in 2027

Based on various reports, Apple could delay the launch of the vanilla iPhone 18 to the first half of 2027. The other members of the iPhone 18 family, however—the iPhone 18 Pro, the iPhone 18 Pro Max, the iPhone Air 2, and the highly-anticipated iPhone 18 Fold—are all still due to arrive in 2026.

If true, Apple's 2026 product lineup might consist of the iPhone 17e (which is probably coming in spring), in addition to the high-end iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max units, the Air 2, and the foldable iPhone. That would be a five-phone lineup — but importantly, without the base iPhone 18.

A Strategic Shift Toward Premium Models

This move would enable Apple to give more limelight to its flagship and foldable devices, particularly as the company continues to beef up its top-of-the-line models. Popular analyst Ming-Chi Kuo had previously teased this possibility, suggesting that Apple might align its release calendar to focus on innovation in its higher-end models.

For the majority of users, that will mean the iPhone 17 continues to be the default choice through 2026. With its beautiful design and improved A19 processor, it continues to feel new enough to keep its ground until the next base model generation comes along.

What to Expect from the iPhone 18 Series

When the iPhone 18 series finally arrives, it's set to bring Apple's next-gen A20 chip with a big performance boost. Rumors also suggest that the 18-megapixel Centre Stage front camera, which debuted in the iPhone 17 series, will be back.

In essence, Apple seems to be spacing its next generation of iPhone releases — prioritizing high-end devices in 2026 and holding the low-end model refresh until 2027, when it will be able to introduce a more significant generational leap.
