Meta has announced that it will open a dedicated Elections Operations Centre in India, bringing experts together to identify potential threats and implement specific mitigations across various platforms such as Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram in order to combat AI-generated fake or manipulated content.
With the largest democracy in the world getting ready for its 18th general election, Meta announced that it will keep up its "support for free and fair elections" by reducing false information, eliminating voter intimidation, and improving accountability and transparency throughout its platforms.

"We are dedicated to the responsible use of new technologies like GenAI and collaborating with industry stakeholders on technical standards for AI detection, as well as combating the spread of deceptive AI content in elections through the Tech Accord," the company said.
According to Meta, in addition to continuing to grow its network of independent fact-checkers in India, it is engaging in consumer awareness campaigns to assist individuals in recognising false material. There are 11 fact-check partners in the country right now, and they speak 15 different languages. More than 15,000 content reviewers on Facebook, Instagram, and Threads assess content in more than 70 languages, with 20 of them being Indian speakers.

"We are closely engaged with the Election Commission of India via the Voluntary Code of Ethics that we joined in 2019, which gives the Commission a high-priority channel to flag unlawful content to us," Meta stated.
Additionally, starting this year, the corporation mandates that marketers anywhere declare when they employ artificial intelligence (AI) or digital techniques to produce or modify a political or social issue advertisement. Prior to elections, WhatsApp will still restrict users' ability to forward messages.
