Meta AI on Instagram: Soon after the news of Meta testing its AI-powered chatbot 'Meta AI' on WhatsApp, the company is now testing the chatbot on its photo and video sharing platform Instagram. The company is adding Meta AI within the search bar to start a chat or explore content on the platform. For eligible users who enter a query in search, the window redirects to the DMs to chat with Meta AI.
First spotted by TechCrunch, users can input a custom query or use the suggested prompts to start a chat. Apart from chat, you can also use it to discover content on the Meta app. Tapping a predefined prompt 'Beautiful Maui sunset Reels' brings a set of Reels suggestions to watch. Users can also search for Reels based on their textual prompts.
This seems a clear move to steer the use cases of AI to not just generate text but also scan through the dataset on Instagram to recommend content. Meta has confirmed the development of the feature to the news outlet. "Our generative AI-powered experiences are under development in varying phases, and we're testing a range of them publicly in a limited capacity," a Meta spokesperson told TechCrunch.
We can confirm that the test is indeed rolling out (screengrab above) in India. Meanwhile, the company is also testing the chatbot on WhatsApp. Users must keep their app updated on Android and iOS to ensure they get access to the feature at the earliest. The integration is available within the search bar to some people who use WhatsApp in English.
For the unaware, Meta AI can "interact like a person" and can access real-time data via Bing. It also offers image generation. According to a screenshot on X, "Meta may use your AI messages to improve AI quality". However, personal messages will not be sent to Meta, and remain end-to-end encrypted.
