Meta regularly introduces new tweaks for its platform to improve the user experience on the app. Continuing this series of changes, the social media giant has announced that it will not "proactively recommend" political content in recommendations if users do not follow such accounts on Instagram and Threads. However, users will still have control over viewing them.
The new changes apply to public accounts where the company recommends content, including Explore, Reels, In-Feed Recommendations and Suggested Users, Instagram said. This won't change the policy of how the content is suggested for accounts that people follow. Political content dealing with "laws, elections, or social topics" can still reach followers via Feed and Stories.
As for Professional accounts on Instagram, they can check for recommendation eligibility from the 'Account Status' option. From here, they can remove and edit posts, request a review of Meta's decision or stop posting content of a similar nature for a specific time period to be eligible again.

"If people still want to see this type of political content on Threads and Instagram recommendation surfaces, there will be a control for people to choose to see it. This control will also roll out on Facebook at a later date," Meta said. These changes will roll out gradually for users.
Instagram Head Adam Mosseri also shared about the update on the text-based app Threads: "If you follow political accounts on Threads or Instagram, we want to avoid getting between you and their content. That said, we also don't want to proactively amplify political content from accounts you don't follow."

"Over the next few weeks we will be improving how we avoid recommending content about politics on recommendation surfaces...If you want political recommendations, you will have a control to opt into getting them," Mosseri added in a series of Threads posts.
