Microsoft Windows 11 Update: Microsoft has confirmed an unusual bug that users are encountering while updating their PC's. If the user makes a simple error the PC “might remain in a state where it cannot accept further Windows security updates.” This comes as bad news as it will create a puzzling situation if and when it happens.

Reports from Windows Latest suggest that “if you use a USB or drive to install Windows 11 24H2 with the October 2024 or November 2024 security updates included, you might end up breaking Windows Update. By default, Windows 11 24H2 ships without October or November security patches.”

Microsoft has specified in its documentation that, “when using media to install Windows 11, version 24H2, the device might remain in a state where it cannot accept further Windows security updates. This occurs only when the media is created to include the October 2024, or November 2024, security updates as part of the installation (these updates were released between October 8, 2024 and November 12, 2024)... This only occurs when utilizing media - such as CD and USB flash drives - to install Windows 11, version 24H2. This issue does not occur for devices where the October 2024 security update or the November 2024 security updates are installed via Windows Update.”

Microsoft still remains in a tight spot when it comes to Windows 11, as the stats do not incline to favor it, as hundreds of millions of users still want to continue with Windows 10. To make matters more complicated, contradictory media reports indicate that the company may or may not be easing its hardware requirements for upgrading from Windows 10 to Windows 11.

How can you fix the bug?

Microsoft has confirmed the issue and is actively engaging in finding a solution, and for the time being, has provided an ad hoc resolution for Windows 11 users.

Now the question is what needs to be done in order to install new cumulative updates after installing the Windows 11 24H2 update. As per Windows Latest report, it has been specified that " You’ll need to download the Media Creation tool, create a fresh media file, and reinstall the OS." Although it is only a "workaround" which requires a bit more effort than a usual bug fix, it also means that the user is basically installing the OS from the beginning. Microsoft has affirmed that it will provide a proper fix for this issue the details of which will come out in January, as per Windows Latest.

Will it affect your gaming?

Microsoft has already outlined several issues that users might encounter after installing the October 2024 and November 2024 security updates. Amongst the major issues, it has been reported that a few games with Auto HDR enabled might not respond properly and might display incorrect colours under certain configuration or might just stop responding altogether.

Users might also encounter difficulties in launching Microsoft Outlook when Google Workspace Sync is active.
