Microsoft, a Redmond-headquartered tech giant, has introduced a range of AI-based tweaks for its products in recent months. Similar to Google and Samsung, the Windows maker is now introducing a generative AI-based eraser tool for its Photos app. The feature is currently rolling out for users of the Windows Insiders update. Users can update to the '2024.11020.21001.0' or above version to try out the feature.

Next to Generative erase, the company is also introducing features such as Blur background and Remove and replace background within its photo viewing and editing app for Arm64 systems and Windows 10 OS, Microsoft added. These changes will also be available to Windows 10 Insiders Preview testers.

With Generative erase, the Spot fix tool has been upgraded with AI powers. "This feature allows you to fix and remove distractions from your photos, like background objects or miscellaneous visual clutter," the company noted in its blog post. In comparison, the AI-based tweak offers more "seamless and realistic results" after objects are removed from photos, even in large areas.

To use the feature, users testing the Insiders build can start using the feature via the Edit options and choose the Erase option. To remove an element from a photo, users can brush over it. They can also adjust the brush size for precise edits. For more controls on removing objects, "you can disable Auto Apply to add or remove masks, where each mask represents an area that will be erased."

These features will be live for Windows Insiders users testing the Windows 11 and Windows 10 Insider build. Apart from these, the company also introduced other "stability fixes and improvements for users". Microsoft has not revealed whether these images will come with metadata or watermark for identifying its AI-based edited character. Google and Samsung also offer a similar feature for users on their flagship smartphones.
