Netflix has officially expanded beyond streaming movies and shows—it’s now letting you play games right on your TV. For the first time, Netflix subscribers can dive into interactive gaming from the comfort of their living rooms, using their smartphones as controllers. The move marks a major evolution in Netflix’s entertainment strategy, blending video streaming with social, family-friendly gameplay.
Netflix’s Leap from Mobile to TV Gaming
On the map of Netflix’s daring quests, the journey away from the TV and toward the mobile came not four but rather one day ago. What started four years ago as a silent mobile-testing period has now turned into the company's most daring decision yet: building a library of casual and original games for smartphones while launching a smart TV app to bring users the same games.
This expansion turns Netflix into more than just a streaming platform—it’s now competing for your family’s game night too. By offering games directly on TV, Netflix positions itself alongside gaming consoles and cloud platforms, aiming to make entertainment more social and interactive.
How to Start Playing on Your Smart TV
The process is straightforward. First, the Netflix app on your TV is accessed, then you click on the Games tab (new), select a title, and so the phone will serve as a controller. In fact, there is no need for any other equipment, and it only takes a few seconds to install.
The concept also makes Netflix's games much more attractive to families late at night, group gatherings, or even a quick challenge between watching your favourite shows. The strategy is aimed at bringing users back to Netflix not only for watching but also for playing.
Five Fun Games to Try on Netflix TV
In their initial launch of TV-compatible games, the focus of Netflix is on social interaction in the form of group play and shared fun – these being perfect for casual parties.
Boggle Party: Race against friends to spot words in a jumble of letters — up to eight players can join in.
LEGO Party!: Compete in fast-paced mini-games that test reflexes and teamwork.
Party Crashers: Fool Your Friends: A guessing game where one player is the secret imposter trying to blend in.
Pictionary: Game Night: Sketch and guess before the timer runs out — a true party classic reborn.
Tetris Time Warp: Go head-to-head in a friendly race for the highest score in the legendary puzzle game.
These are the titles that shed light on Netflix’s transition towards social entertainment, which implies no more playing alone but rather joining people through such activities.
Netflix’s Bigger Vision for Social Gaming
Joining the Bloomberg Screentime Conference, Netflix co-CEO Greg Peters expressed that Netflix’s aim is to create "social gaming experiences in the comfort of one's home." The French Canadian executive, Alain Tascan, who is in charge of Netflix's gaming, also emphasised the same idea by saying that the company's mission is to "bring happiness to the world through interactive content, especially for groups."
The concept of Netflix is that it becomes a place that you want to come back to every day – even if you are not there to see – by designing games that are easy to play and share and that are amusing.
At the moment, Netflix TV gaming is available only on some smart TVs in registered areas. The company is planning a wider distribution for the near future but has not yet announced the release date.
