Until now the rumors whispered that Xbox consoles might be coming to an end with Microsoft ending its production, but for its fans there is a sigh of relief as the tech giant has finally unveiled what it plans to do with its gaming future. The company has announced its latest aspiration and its upcoming Xbox console, which is codenamed "Project Helix," which will take over the current Xbox franchise, and this time Microsoft is going to introduce a much-awaited change: a crossplay integration between PC games as well, funneling a massive gaming ecosystem into one device. Let's take a detailed look at what got announced.

Microsoft had only recently announced that Asha Sharma would head the Microsoft Gaming wing as executive vice president and CEO, and this new console announcement comes through her only via a post on X. The codenamed Project Helix, the device is meant to handle both PC and console releases. This means players in the future would be able to enjoy PC as well as Xbox exclusive titles on their new console when this project finalizes.

 

Idea Been On The Anvil For A While

The idea of a “hybrid” console that blends the PC and console experience also lines up with comments previously made by Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella. In late 2025, Nadella said the company was rethinking the long-held belief that consoles and PCs should exist as separate platforms. He also hinted that the next-generation Xbox would lean heavily on Windows, moving away from the traditional closed ecosystem that most consoles operate in.

Project Helix appears to reflect that direction. According to reports, the device could support PC game libraries from multiple shopfronts such as Steam and the Epic Games Store right from launch. If that happens, it would mark a big shift for Microsoft’s console strategy, with the system expected to eventually replace the current Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S generation.

When can you expect the new Xbox?

Reports suggest that the console could make its way to the shelves in 2027, which is still months away, a year away, as far as the announcement date is concerned; internal paperwork suggests 2026 or 2027 as a "best-case scenario," although there is no confirmation of dates by the company yet as far as an official release timeline is concerned.

The Redmond-based tech giant will expand on more details later in the upcoming Game Developers Conference (GDC), where the company is expected to showcase new developer tools and platform capabilities. The newly appointed Vice President and CEO Asha will join the GDC conference for discussions happening next week in San Francisco, where more details about Project Helix are expected. The Gamers Developer Conference will run for a week, March 9 to March 13, bringing the leaders in gaming tech to one place.
