There have been some plans for AI-powered hardware devices that OpenAI has already confirmed to launch in the next couple of years. Initially, the rumours suggested a pen-like gadget developed with former Apple designer Jony Ive; as per the new report, ChatGPT developer’s first consumer product could be a smart speaker equipped with a camera. For the upcoming device, we can expect it to be heavily focused on contextual awareness and proactive assistance, setting it apart from the existing smart speakers.
OpenAI Smart Speaker: What the Report Says
As per the recent report by The Information, OpenAI is working on a smart speaker priced between $200 and $300. Reports suggest that the device is said to be capable of recognising “items on a nearby table or conversations people are having in the vicinity.”

Unlike traditional smart speakers, the report claims that “the device will be able to observe users through video and nudge them toward actions it believes will help them achieve their goals.” It further adds, “You could imagine the device observing its user staying up late the night before a big meeting and suggesting that they go to bed, for example.”
Facial Recognition and Advanced Capabilities
The publication also suggests that the device may include Face ID-like facial recognition technology to enable shopping features. However, it remains unclear whether this technology will be used for purchasing products online or for user authentication and sign-in processes.
When compared to existing offerings such as Google Home, Amazon Echo, and Apple HomePod, OpenAI’s smart speaker is expected to feature more advanced hardware and deeper AI-driven interactions.

Launch Timeline and Other Hardware Plans
Reports suggests that the the smart speaker is unlikely to launch before February 2027. Additionally, OpenAI is also rumoured to be developing smart glasses, though these are not expected to be ready for mass production until 2028.
If the report proves accurate, OpenAI’s first hardware product could mark a significant shift in the smart device landscape. With visual awareness, proactive suggestions, and advanced recognition features, the company’s smart speaker may go beyond voice commands, offering a more personalised and goal-oriented AI experience compared to current smart home devices.
