OpenAI has officially rolled out its much-hyped AI video generation app, Sora, for Android users. However, access remains limited for now—the app is only available in Canada, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, the US, and Vietnam. Following a record-breaking debut on iOS earlier this year, OpenAI is now expanding its reach to Android, signalling its growing push into the mobile AI creativity space.

Sora’s Journey: From iOS to Android

Sora was first released for iOS in September 2025 and quickly became an instantaneous success, garnering over one million downloads in just seven days and topping App Store charts around the globe. When released for Android in early December 2025 on the Google Play Store, it is anticipated to attract even more eager users wanting to experiment with AI-driven video creation.

OpenAI's move onto Android indicates its intention of making AI-powered storytelling and content creation more accessible across platforms; however, the planned phased rollout indicates its need for careful consideration amid ongoing policy and legal concerns.

What’s Included in the Android Version

Sora for Android includes all of its iOS features and provides a complete creative toolbox for AI-generated video content creation.

Key Features of Sora App

Feature

Description

Cameos

Lets users create hyper-realistic AI videos of themselves performing actions or appearing in new environments.

Video Feed

Users can share, browse, like, and comment on others’ AI-generated videos.

Scene Customization

Provides control over lighting, mood, and setting to refine the generated video output.

Cross-Platform Sharing

Cameos remain Sora's signature feature - enabling creators to insert digital versions of themselves into any scene, from dance routines to cinematic moments.

Controversies Surrounding Sora

Viral success hasn't stopped Sora's launch from encountering issues. Shortly after being released to iOS, users began making inappropriate or disrespectful content involving public figures as well as copyrighted characters such as SpongeBob and Pikachu.

This led to mounting criticism over copyright and ethical concerns, prompting OpenAI to change its content policy from an opt-out model to an opt-in system for rights holders — meaning copyrighted material can no longer be used unless explicitly permitted.

Adding to the complications, TechCrunch reports that OpenAI is now facing a legal dispute with the celebrity video platform Cameo, which claims that Sora’s “Cameos” feature infringes on its brand and trademarks.

Availability and Regional Access

For now, Sora for Android is available only in:

- United States

- Canada

- Japan

- Korea

- Taiwan

- Thailand

- Vietnam

There has been no official statement from Open AI as to when they plan to move into regions such as India and Europe. With one of the reasons being the lack of regional content and compliance which Open AI has assured will be put into place.

Final Thoughts

The launch of Sora for Android finally lets Open Ai claim the title of leading AI video generation. With the ability for users to make realistic and generated videos on Sora, Open Ai is making a huge shift in visual storytelling and moving away from traditional storytelling forms. Yet as Sora gains more users, Open AI has the responsibility of protecting to a fair extent the innovation and not over-restricting users in regions where Sora has not yet launched. The users in these regions will likely appreciate the delays on launch.
