OpenAI is preparing to make one of its biggest policy shifts yet for ChatGPT, allowing adult users to engage in erotic conversations with the AI chatbot. The change aligns with the company’s philosophy to “treat adult users like adults,” as stated by CEO Sam Altman in a recent post on X (formerly Twitter).
OpenAI’s New Direction for ChatGPT
OpenAI plans on relaxing some of these restrictions for verified adult users of ChatGPT. Topics such as suicide, self-harm and sexually explicit content were previously taboo, while topics like suicide were strictly off limits. However, OpenAI will now loosen some of these boundaries for verified adult users.

According to Altman, the company had previously made ChatGPT “pretty restrictive” to ensure safety while addressing serious mental health concerns. He admitted that while those restrictions were necessary, they also made ChatGPT less engaging for users who had no such issues.
“We made ChatGPT pretty restrictive to make sure we were being careful with mental health issues. We realise this made it less useful or enjoyable to many users who had no mental health problems, but given the seriousness of the issue, we wanted to get this right,” Altman said.
Age Verification Will Be Mandatory
While this update will bring with it greater personalisation and freedom, there will also be clear boundaries imposed through age verification. Only adults will have access to the erotic chat mode; minors will remain protected through this policy that represents OpenAI's efforts at providing responsible innovation with user autonomy.
Improved Safety Tools and AI Personality Options
Altman revealed that OpenAI has developed improved detection tools to identify mental health issues more effectively. These advancements have given the company confidence to relax its rules without compromising user safety.
OpenAI plans to release an updated version of ChatGPT within weeks that will allow users to customise its personality further – from friendly emoji-laden chatbot conversations to humanised ones.

“In a few weeks, we plan to put out a new version of ChatGPT that allows people to have a personality that behaves more like what people liked about 4o (we hope it will be better!). If you want your ChatGPT to respond in a very human-like way, or act like a friend, ChatGPT should do it — but only if you want it,” Altman wrote.
What This Means for Users
OpenAI marks an impressive breakthrough in AI's interaction with people. By giving users more freedom and control, the company hopes ChatGPT can become more human-like – while still adhering to rigorous safety standards.
The forthcoming update could radically transform how millions of adults utilise AI, merging emotional intelligence with personalisation and open discussion in a manner that's both empowering and responsible.
