After 2025’s Operation Sindoor—India’s precision strikes on terrorist assets in Pakistan and PoK—the Government is concentrating on another threat: misinformation warfare. Following the surge in malicious and falsified content rapidly increasing online the post-attack, and even AI-generated images/videos are being used to manipulate news. Meity has now suggested some guidelines for the citizens. Aimed at controlling the spread of fake news that can escalate violence, mislead the populace, or threaten national interests, the advisory encourages the verification of sources and responsible reporting while highlighting the reckless sharing on social media. Users are urged to exercise caution and not become victims of disinformation during extremely delicate phases in the context of national events.

MeitY Requests Indians to Follow Cybersecurity Precautions

MeitY has posted a precautionary alert on X urging prudent browsing. The Ministry of Information and Digital Technology (IT) emphasises patriotism in surfing the web, advising users to heed cybersecurity measures and remain sharp in dodging traps and deceit.

Users have been requested to provide information regarding the availability of helplines or other official advisories and updates on relief measures as this information can assist users located in the impacted regions as well as keep others updated on official sources providing critical information.

MeitY also states that users need to ensure that any information they wish to share with other users has undergone the necessary fact verification processes. The internet is rife with fact-checking entities, and the Press Information Bureau (PIB) has been notably active in combating the spread of false information on social media.

In the meantime, the IT minister has warned users not to publicly disclose sensitive information about Operation Sindoor. This entails not sharing details about troop movements or other defence-related specifics on social media platforms.

Users have been cautioned against forwarding or disseminating information without verification. This comes after the Doordarshan News X post informing the public on a retaliatory propaganda wave post Operation Sindoor featuring urges for careful information scrutiny and counter reporting to the PIB fact-checking division.

The Ministry of IT has condemned users for posting information that can incite violence or cause communal disharmony within the country. The government has invited users to report any fake news that they see online through WhatsApp (+91 8799711259) or send an email to socialmedia@pib.gov.in.
