Flipkart-owned digital payments giant PhonePe has entered into a strategic partnership with OpenAI to integrate the company's advanced artificial intelligence technology into its platform. The collaboration, which was announced on Thursday, is set to make the app experience at PhonePe more intuitive and assistive while expanding the reach for ChatGPT across India.
The integration will not turn the PhonePe app into a chatbot but will bring ChatGPT-powered features into different parts of the platform. These AI-led experiences will help users do everything from exploring products and travel plans to making more confident purchase decisions. The idea is to offer contextual, human-like assistance directly within the app, without requiring users to interact separately with ChatGPT.

In a statement, PhonePe emphasised that this move is designed to foster mutual business growth and increase AI adoption in India. While details of the financial terms were not disclosed, the company said the collaboration will also enable OpenAI to access PhonePe’s vast user base and its expanding ecosystem, which includes the Indus Appstore.
Oliver Jay, Head of International at OpenAI, described the partnership as an important step toward democratising access to AI in India. “Our collaboration with PhonePe is a significant milestone in our mission to make AI more accessible to people throughout India. India is a global hub for innovation, and PhonePe's deep understanding of the country's fabric and its user base makes them the ideal partner,” Jay said.
This is not the first time OpenAI has partnered with an Indian fintech platform. In October, Razorpay joined hands with OpenAI and the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) to pilot agentic AI-based UPI transactions within ChatGPT.
OpenAI's focus on India has been increasing gradually. The company recently announced opening its maiden physical office in the country, along with building a huge 1 GW data centre to support AI infrastructure. It has also made the ChatGPT Go plan free in India for the next 12 months, reflecting its commitment to increasing adoption and accessibility.
