PlayStation 6 Confirmed: Plans for the next-gen console from Sony have been confirmed, and the gaming community is now filled with excitement to see what the company has in store this time. Although there is not much information available about the upcoming PlayStation, and Sony Interactive Entertainment has only given a glimpse of information about the console. These days the buzz is all about cloud gaming, and it seems like Sony is taking a more traditional approach as it moves towards a newer generation of consoles; we might get to see an enhanced cloud gaming experience while keeping the traditional physical consoles as well. We can expect the PlayStation 6 to launch somewhere between 2026 and 2028 considering Sony's 6-7 year gaming console release cycle.

One of the core features of gaming on consoles is that the gamers get full control over their high-fidelity gaming experience without depending on a network like cloud gaming; therefore, it seems that Sony would be moving forward with an integrated approach when it comes to its new console. Players still value their ownership of physical media, and for some it's more than just gaming CDs that collect dust; it's more like memorabilia, like a collector's item.

Expected PlayStation 6 Specs vs PlayStation 5 and 5 Pro

It is expected that Sony is going to move forward with its partnership with AMD for its chip for the PS6, possibly a custom Zen 4 processor with 12 cores. The current PS5 runs on an AMD Zen 2 8-core processor, which is the same for the PS5 Pro as well.

The GPU is also expected to get beefy, and it is expected to offer up to 18 TFLOPS of power as compared to the PS5's 10.28 TFLOPS and the PS5 Pro's 16.7 TFLOPS.

When it comes to RAM, we might get to see GDDR7 RAM, and for storage, we might get a 2TB PCIe 5.0 NVMe SSD.

Another area where Sony might expand its horizon is AI and machine learning, with its project Amethyst in collaboration with AMD, which potentially means upgrading upscaling tech like PSSR, which has been introduced in the PS5 Pro.

Apart from that, backwards compatibility is also on the table for both PS4 and PS5 games.

What Gamers Are Looking Forward To

When it comes to consoles, Sony has never disappointed, but the base PS5 still trails behind the Xbox Series X when it comes to GPU performance. The Xbox Series X, although running on the old RDNA 2 architecture, runs on 12.155 TFLOPS when compared to the base PS5, which runs on 10.28 TFLOPS. Although this is something which has been improved upon in the PS5 Pro, but if we are going to see a next-gen Xbox console as well, PlayStation fans would be looking forward to more in terms of raw power.

Enhanced ray tracing on 4K, even 8K, at a consistent 120 fps is also something the consoles of the next generation cannot miss out on, and for all games, not just compatible ones.

Do You Really Need A PlayStation 6?

Although every gaming console creates a good hype when it is initially launched, just like the PS5 and Xbox Series X did, the question is, do you really need that? Unless we get something that truly requires specs that current hardware cannot support, there is really no need to upgrade if you already have a PS5 or a PS5 Pro, as all the exclusives are already available there, and if you are happy with consistent 4K 30-60 or even 120 fps for some games with HDR – which is pretty good – then it would be quite redundant to spend on a PS6. Also would it be worth it to pay an extra cost for that?

The PS5 Pro, with its recently introduced PSSR upscaling tech, can also deliver 4K 120 fps gaming for compatible games and also comes with ray tracing ability. Now, unless Rockstar's GTA 6 isn't compatible with the current generation of consoles, there wouldn't be much of a reason for you to go ahead with a PlayStation 6 as PS5 will co-exist with the new cosole just like PS4 did and you will still be getting all the exclusive games and features on the previous version.

For now not much has been revealed about the console, but the excitement continues to build as Sony moves forward with its next console steadily.
