WhatsApp has started rolling out a new AI-driven feature aimed at making it easier for users to catch up on unread messages. Called Message Summaries, the tool uses Meta’s in-house AI to provide quick overviews of unread chats, allowing users to understand what’s going on without scrolling through every single message.

Currently, the feature is being made available in English for users in the United States, with WhatsApp planning to expand it to more regions and languages later this year.

In an official statement, WhatsApp explained the feature “uses Meta AI to privately and quickly summarise unread messages in a chat, so you can get an idea of what is happening before reading the details in your unread messages.”

Message Summaries is completely optional and turned off by default. Users who wish to use it will have to enable it manually. WhatsApp is also offering an Advanced Chat Privacy option, which gives users control over which conversations can be used for AI-based features.

Built on Private Processing for Enhanced Privacy

At the core of this update is WhatsApp’s Private Processing framework, first introduced in April. It’s designed to support AI tasks while maintaining user privacy. This technology runs AI processes in a Confidential Virtual Machine (CVM) within a secure cloud-based Trusted Execution Environment (TEE), and it relies on Oblivious HTTP (OHTTP) connections to protect data flow between the user’s device and the cloud.

The company has emphasised that no external parties—including Meta or WhatsApp itself—can access message content when summaries are generated.

“No one else in the chat can see that you summarised unread messages either,” the platform confirmed. “This means your privacy is protected at all times.”

Privacy vs. Policy

While WhatsApp is rolling out new features focused on user privacy, the app has also come under scrutiny. Recently, the U.S. House of Representatives added WhatsApp to the list of applications banned on government-issued devices due to security concerns.

Despite this, the launch of Message Summaries marks another step in WhatsApp’s ongoing integration of AI in a privacy-conscious manner.
