PlayStation 6: If you’ve been hearing the buzz around the PlayStation 6 lately and it’s got you nervously checking your savings, don’t panic—there’s no need to start budgeting for a new console just yet.

The PlayStation 5 is approaching its fifth birthday this year, and while five years might sound like a reasonable lifespan in tech years, fans aren’t quite ready to move on. And for good reason. The PS5’s early years were anything but normal. Launched in late 2020, right in the thick of the pandemic, the console was plagued by stock shortages, scalpers, and delays that made it nearly impossible for many gamers to get one in the first place.

So even though the PS5 technically launched five years ago, a big chunk of the fanbase only got their hands on it much later. And let’s not forget—some players feel the PS5 hasn’t yet delivered the exclusive games they were hoping for (though that’s a whole other conversation).

That’s why talk of a PS6 showing up soon has made a lot of people uneasy. But here’s the good news: according to a new leak, it looks like the next-generation PlayStation is still a long way off.

The info comes from known leaker Detective Seeds, who recently posted this on Twitter:

“According to a PlayStation engineer working on the hardware side of the house, the PS6 will be announced in 2028 and released in late fall/early winter 2029.

Dev kits are estimated to be distributed to developers around spring 2026 at the same time the PS5 Pro gets the upgrade to FSR4.”

That “FSR4” refers to AMD’s FidelityFX Super Resolution version 4, which is expected to replace Sony’s current upscaling tech, PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution). Since FSR4 itself isn’t arriving until 2026, it makes sense that the PS6 won’t be ready for a few more years.

Mark Cerny, the PS5’s lead architect, also chimed in with some insight about the timeline, stating:

“AMD is moving extremely quickly. What I’m trying to do is prepare for the next generation of consoles, so my time frame is multi-year here.”

So, there it is. The PS6 is coming—but not for a while. With a projected announcement in 2028 and a release closer to the end of 2029, you’ve got several more years to enjoy your PS5 without any fear of it becoming obsolete overnight.

For now, just sit back, relax, and enjoy the games. There’s no rush to upgrade—your PS5 is still in its prime.
