Hard as it is to believe, Sony's next giant leap—the PS6—is coming near, it is said. Actually, hints from Mark Cerny, the brain behind the PlayStation, are making the whole thing less of a rumour.

During a discussion with AMD’s Jack Huynh, Cerny described Project Amethyst, a program with Sony and AMD designed to exceed the limits of console gaming. The discussion about future PlayStation hardware provided the first recognisable sign for the possibility of the PS6 not being far away.

What Is Project Amethyst Exactly?

Project Amethyst is the collaboration between Sony and AMD that aims at redefining graphics rendering and performance for gaming consoles. The main goal? Applying AI and machine learning to drastically reduce the resource consumption of highly detailed features like ray tracing.

Currently, ray tracing can be considered a marvel of the visuals, but it is very GPU-intensive, and thus it often limits games to 30 frames per second. The use of AI-driven optimisation may enable the console to provide the same level of visual quality with a frame rate of 60 or even 120 at 4K resolution.

In less technical terms, Project Amethyst is a plan to make games as visually appealing as possible and run at the highest frame rate ever, but not at the expense of the GPU.

PS6 Release Could Be as Soon as “A Few Years”

Even though the project is still at its infancy stage, Cerny dropped a hint that Sony’s next console might well be just around the corner. “It's very early days for this technology," he said, emphasising that the technology is only in simulation right now. Consequently, he was positively compelled to add, “I am really excited about bringing them to a future console in a few years’ time.”

Pretty much the only other choice for the phrase “future console” is PlayStation 6.

What the Players Expect From PS6

Other than tech talk, one thing is for sure: the fans have an opinion about the PS6 and what it should be capable of.

1. Even Better, Drift-Free Controllers

The DualSense controller from Sony is great, but the industry still isn't over stick drift. By substituting the current joystick with H. E. ones that are famous for their high resistance, it would be like letting the players off the hook of one of their biggest annoyances.

2. More Storage Options

While the single PS5 with 825GB of SSD storage was sufficient for the launch, several tiers should provide plenty of room for multiple consoles; thus, players might choose 2TB, 4TB, or even more and install as many games as they like without worrying about space or using an external drive.

3. Absolute Backward Compatibility

Fans of PlayStation have wished for backward compatibility with all previous generations for a long time. Think of how things could be if a PS3 disc was inserted directly into a PS6 to play it without any restrictions—no reissues, no downloads, pure nostalgia. That is one move that will definitely set PS6 apart from its predecessors.
