Snapdragon 8 Elite Seven-Core:The Snapdragon 8 Elite SoC was unveiled by Qualcomm in October last year, and currently, the processor with eight cores powers a few prominent OEMs like the OnePlus and Realme. Now, only recently the chipmaker has unveiled a new variant of the Snapdragon 8 Elite chip with seven cores.

The new version offers the same clocking speed as the standard Snapdragon 8 Elite chip. It is anticipated that the upcoming new devices will be equipped with the new seven-core variant of the Snapdragon 8 Elite chip over the next few months. The chip features Prime and Performance cores in 2+5 configuration.

An 8 Elite with One Less Performance Core?

The latest introduced variant of the Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset, identified by the part number SM8750-3-AB, is now listed on the chipmaker’s website. This updated version features a total of seven CPU cores, including two Prime cores running at speeds up to 4.32 GHz and five Performance cores reaching up to 3.53 GHz. Notably, this variant has one fewer Performance core compared to the original Snapdragon 8 Elite.

The standard version of the Snapdragon 8 Elite with eight cores came out in October last year with the number SM8750-AB, which hosts two prime cores running at 4.32Ghz and six performance cores clocked at up to 3.53Ghz. The other specifications of the new seven-core chip are quite similar to its standard variant, suggesting that it could be a binned version of the Snapdragon 8 Elite chip. A 3-nanometer fabrication process was used to manufacture this chip just like its standard 8 Elite version and carries Snapdragon's X80 5G Modem-RF system.

It is expected that this new seven-core version of the Snapdragon 8 Elite will cost less than the standard version, and it is also a much more viable option for smartphone makers to opt for this seven-core chip as it is more cost-effective for their flagships of lower segments. However, a list containing the names of OEMs who will opt for the seven-core Snapdragon 8 Elite is yet to be revealed by Qualcomm.

Additionally, Qualcomm might be working on a Snapdragon 8s Elite SoC which will be the successor to previous year's Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 Soc. Recent reports suggest that it will be a trimmed-down version of the standard Snapdragon 8 Elite flagship SoC.
