JE Technology Desk: Reddit Blackout: If you are unable to access any communities, it is not due to a server meltdown or a weak network; rather, the report claims that there is a Reddit blackout. Thousands of Reddit Communities are apparently not accessible today in protest of the social media site's management.
What Is Reddit Blackout?
The social networking platform had previously disclosed that third-party app developers will need to pay to access the site's data. According to the report, the moderators decided to stage a protest since they felt the announcement was unsatisfactory. Furthermore, according to the sources, over 3,000 subreddit groups have declared that they will stop posting starting today.
Protesting communities include r/apple, r/videos, r/sports, and r/MildlyInteresting, which have prevented members from visiting their pages. If you try to access the communities, a message will appear stating that it is a private community. It also says, "We stand in solidarity with a large number of people who require API access, including bot developers, people with accessibility needs (r/blind), and third-party app users (Apollo, Sync, and so on."
When Will Reddit Blackout End?
The Reddit Blackout protest, according to reports, will continue for at least 48 hours, while other groups have said they'll keep the site black longer.
Can Users Access Reddit Communities During Blackout?
Since the communities have been private, a person can only access a subreddit if the moderators give them permission to do so. In this case, it is very clear that the moderators will not be giving the people access.
What Exactly Is Happening?
The social media platform would charge third-party app developers for using the site's data, such as postings, reader comments, and more, which means developers would be billed millions of dollars just to access the information. On the other hand, Reddit also intends to implement a new price system starting next month, and as a result, app developers Apollo and Sync have vowed to cease operations on June 30.
