Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 launched at the Unpacked 2023 event as the spiritual successor to the Z Fold 4 on July 26. The highly-anticipated device is protected with an upgraded Gorilla Glass Victus 2 on both sides and ships with an upgraded hinge for refined mechanical movements.

For starters, the most noticeable difference is visible is the thickness. Thanks to the new hinge the Z Fold 5 measures 6.1mm (against 6.3mm of Z Fold 4) when unfolded and 13.4mm (against 14.2mm of Z Fold 4) when folded. Plus, it is lighter by 10g at 253g. Display

The Fold 5 has a 7.6-inch QXGA+ main and 6.2-inch HD+ cover Dynamic AMOLED 2X 120Hz screen with 1750 nits of peak brightness (main display). On the flip side, the Z Fold 4 has a 7.6-inch QXGA+ main and 6.2-inch HD+ cover Dynamic AMOLED 2X 120Hz screen with up to 1000 nits of peak brightness (main).

Performance

Under the hood, the Fold 5 has a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip with a clock speed of up to 3.36GHz. Its predecessor gets a Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1.

Software

The latest phone runs on One UI 5.1.1 based on Android 13. The Z Fold 4 shipped with One UI 4.1.1 on top of Android 12.

Battery

The Fold 5 gets a 4400mAh battery with 25W wired and 15W wireless charging. The Fold 4 also gets a 4400mAh battery with 25W wired and 15W wireless charging. The battery department remains more or less the same.

Camera

Speaking of the cameras, the Fold 5 gets a 50MP OIS primary, 12MP ultrawide, and 12MP telephoto lens on the back and a 10MP and 4MP camera on the front. Moving to the Fold 4, it gets a 50MP primary, 12MP ultra-wide and 10MP telephoto lens. As for the selfie, it has a 10MP selfie camera and a 4MP in-screen lens. While the cameras are the same on paper, users can expect improvements in the software.
