Samsung has revealed its newest innovation in smartphone photography—the ISOCELL HP5, a 200MP camera sensor that comes into the market as the globe's first with a pixel size of 0.5µm. Though its extremely tiny pixels render it less ideal for flagship main cameras, the HP5 is specifically designed for tele and periscope systems to deliver crisper zoom and enhanced colour accuracy.

Small Size, Smarter Light Capture

The ISOCELL HP5 has a 1/1.56-inch optical size, smaller than most of its high-res antecedents. To offset the typical weaknesses of minute pixels—diminished light capture and greater noise—Samsung has implemented several breakthroughs.

Among them are Front Deep Trench Isolation (FDTI) and double Vertical Transfer Gate (D-VTG), both of which improve electron storage and increase sensitivity to light. A DTI Center Cut (DCC) design reduces random noise and improves autofocus accuracy. Combined, these upgrades enable the HP5 to deliver crisp, nicely balanced photos even under difficult illumination conditions.

Colour processing has also been optimised. Samsung's High Precision Microlens, High Transmittance ARL, and High Sensitivity DTI technologies enhance light absorption and colour stability to create rich, true-to-life colours in both bright and dark settings.

Processing Speed and Colour Depth

The HP5 features E2E remosaic processing driven by AI inside, and it records full 200MP photos in under two seconds. The 13-bit colour depth of the sensor is converted to more than 550 billion colours and employs Staggered HDR and Smart ISO Pro to provide the best dynamic range for a vast array of light conditions.

Flexible Shooting Options

While designed for zoom systems, the HP5 also helps mid-range smartphones' primary cameras. It enables 2x in-sensor zoom for wide-angle lenses and 6x lossless zoom when supplemented with a 3x telephoto lens.

Performance-wise, it records images at 7.5 fps in 200MP, 30 fps in 50MP, and 90 fps in 12.5MP resolutions. The sensor supports RAW formats of 8-bit to 14-bit, and video capture goes up to 8K at 30 fps, 4K at 120 fps, and Full HD at 480 fps.

Samsung's Tetrapixel technology combines its small 0.5µm pixels at low light, producing 12.5MP images at 2.0µm or 50MP images at 1.0µm, finding a balance between brightness and detail.

Mass Production and Future Devices

Samsung has already commenced mass production of the ISOCELL HP5, indicating that future smartphones—particularly those with high-end telephoto configurations—will soon incorporate the new sensor.
